How To Install LED Tube Lights

For the LED tube light installation to be simple, you will have to make some simple modifications to the fixture to properly install the bulbs. Then you can enjoy better lighting using approximately half the electricity and lasting as long as 50,000 hours or more

You will have to make some simple modifications to the fixture to properly install the bulbs. The good news is that installing LED tube lights in an existing fluorescent fixture is relatively simple.

In addition, you should be able to buy fixtures especially designed for these lights in the near future, and they should actually be cheaper than the equivalent fluorescent fixtures.

Fluorescent fixtures are designed to support a specific types and size of fluorescent tube. A fluorescent tube is incorporated into a fluorescent lighting system which consists of two or three main components of the fluorescent lamp (fluorescent bulb or tube), the ballast, and of course the starter system.

Additionally, the system for a tube lamp includes a lamp holder and a switch. Depending on the particular fluorescent lighting system, the starter may be a replaceable component, a starter may not be required, or the starter function may be integrated into the ballast.

The starting function may also rely on the physical design of the fixture. To retrofit a fluorescent light fixture to support a LED tube light, the ballast must be disconnected.

Once the old traditional bulbs are removed from the lamp holders and the electricity to the fixture is turned off, you will probably have to remove the reflector that is located behind the bulbs and provides a housing for the wiring and ballast that lie behind it.

Typically, it is fairly simple to remove the reflector or cover, but if it is not clear how to do this, you should consult the documentation from the fixture manufacturer.

If the fixture has an electronic ballast, you only need to remove that and then wire the power directly to the lamp holders, completing one circuit for each bulb.

This is fairly simple, and typically you can use the existing wire in the fixture and then just add some wire nuts. If you have an older fixture with a magnetic ballast and starter, you will have to remove or open the starter and remove or short the magnetic ballast.

Depending on how much wire you have to work with, it is a good idea to leave long enough wires leading out of the ballast to be able to reconnect the ballast with wire nuts, if you should ever want to convert the fixture back to use for fluorescent bulbs or want to use the ballast somewhere else.

Typically, the ballast will have two screws or bolts holding it in place in the fixture, and these can be removed using a screwdriver or pair of pliers, as appropriate. You have to dispose the ballast according to the local regulations as should the old fluorescent bulbs. Because the fluorescent bulbs contain a small amount of highly-toxic mercury, they should be treated as hazardous waste and disposed of accordingly.

Once the ballast (and starter, if one was present) have been removed and the wires reconnected to complete a circuit for each bulb, replace the reflector or cover over the wiring and the area where the ballast was located, and the LED tube light can be inserted in the end sockets.

Unlike traditional bulbs which do not have a top or bottom, LED tube lights will have an obvious top and bottom, with metallic heat sink located on the backside of the tube and the LEDs visible under a lens on the side that will be aimed towards the area which is to be illuminated. Turn on the switch and if you have done everything properly, now you should have as good or better lighting using approximately half the electricity and lasting as long as 50,000 hours or more.

Energy Saving LED Tube Lights

Are you using energy saving LED tube lights?  There are millions of general service fluorescent tube lights in the market place today, until recently these were considered the most energy efficient lighting solution available

The downside to this type of lighting is that each tube contains a small amount of mercury vapour, a toxic heavy metal.

This can provide not just a health risk when the tubes are broken, but can also accumulate in landfills before entering the water table or causing further pollution.

Fluorescent lamps use electricity to excite mercury vapour inside the glass tube and always require a ballast to regulate the flow of power through the lamp.

A starter is in the circuit to heat the contact ends of the tube that ionizes the mercury vapour creating UV light. The inside of the tube is coated with a phosphor material that glows when exposed to the UV light produced by the mercury inside the fluorescent tube.

Recent developments in SMD (Surface Mount Diode) LED technology have now meant that LED light tubes are now a reality.

LEDs are a more efficient form of lighting product consisting of small chips of conductive material that release light when a current is applied to them.

They contain no filaments and can produce up to 25 times more light per watt than conventional light bulbs.

LEDs require far less energy in their manufacture than fluorescent tubes, and only 3% of the energy they will consume over their life expectancy is consumed in their manufacture, and they are also produced from non toxic materials.

The tubes are made from polycarbonate, a material that is more robust and durable than glass, so accidents will not require special cleanup procedures.

While LED technology is more expensive than existing fluorescents at face value, they will last up to 10 times as long, while consuming 65% less energy.

In most general purpose lighting applications, the additional cost of the LED technology will more than pay for itself within the first 18 months.

The only drawback is the tighter beam angle of the LEDs, while some tubes are manufactured from a polycarbonate light diffusing material, others have a narrow focus which may not be suitable for replacing existing tubes.

Many fluorescent fixtures are designed with reflectors that help to distribute the light from the tubes evenly in their intended environment.

This is a problem similar to what was faced when compact fluorescents began replacing incandescent light bulbs, this problem will soon be overcome and allow faster adoption of this emerging LED tube lights.

Should You Use LED Fluorescent Lights

Will you be using LED fluorescent lights? Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) along with more traditional fluorescent lamps are now being aggressively marketed as environmentally friendly due to their reduced electricity consumption.

Indeed, widespread replacement of incandescent bulbs with CFLs will greatly reduce electricity demand; however, there are safety issues that ultimately contribute to making LED tube lights the superior choice.

Understanding fluorescent lighting risks can help ensure that fluorescent light bulbs are used and disposed of safely while explaining why LED fluorescent light is the safest and most eco-friendly lighting choice in the long run.

Mercury

The most commonly cited fluorescent lighting hazard is mercury. Fluorescent and CFL bulbs contain a small amount of mercury and are identified with the elemental symbol Hg.

When these bulbs are cold, some of the mercury in the lamp is in liquid form, but while the lamp is operating or when the lamp is hot, most of the mercury is in a gaseous or vapor form.

Disposed of improperly, mercury can contaminate buildings, landfills, lakes, animals, fish, birds, humans, crops and rivers. In the US, the EPA has ordered waste handlers to treat fluorescent lamps as hazardous waste.

With such a classification, fluorescent lamps are not to be sent to landfills, but instead are to be sent to recycling centers that break the lamps under special conditions and safely recover the mercury.

Up to 95 percent of the mercury contained in CFLs can be recovered if the bulbs are recycled properly.

The Dimmers

To use a CFL on a dimmer switch, you must buy a bulb that's specifically made to work with dimmers (check the package). GE makes a dimming compact fluorescent light bulb (called the Energy Smart Dimming Spirals) that is specially designed for use with dimming switches.

I don't recommend using regular compact fluorescent bulbs with dimming switches, since this can shorten bulb life. Using a regular compact fluorescent bulb with a dimmer will also nullify the bulb's warranty.

Ultraviolet Light

A long-term hazard from fluorescent lighting is the shorter-wave ultraviolet (UV) light that escapes the lamp. No matter how well crafted, some short-wave ultraviolet light escapes from every fluorescent lamp made.

Short-wave UV light is one of the damaging components of the suns rays that reach the surface of the Earth, which can directly damage organic tissue and trigger cancers. Short-wave UV light can also age or damage paper, fabrics and other materials.

Flicker Effect

Flicker and glare from fluorescent lights can also cause headaches and have been found to impact learning and ability to concentrate. Although humans cannot see fluorescent lights flicker, the sensory system in some individuals can somehow detect the flicker.

Ever since fluorescent lighting was introduced in workplaces, there have been complaints about headaches, eye strain and general eye discomfort.

These complaints have been associated with the light flicker from fluorescent lights. When compared to regular fluorescent lights with magnetic ballasts, the use of high frequency electronic ballasts fluorescent lights resulted in more than a 50% drop in complaints of eye strain and headaches.

As you can see, LED tube lights seem to be the more eco-friendly lighting and safer choice preferred by many people.

If you are willing to lighten up your outdoor space or lawn area, you should definitely consider installing LED flood light fixtures. These lights offer an aesthetic lighting experience with environmentally friendly features .

Before describing the various benefits of LED flood lighting bulbs, let us tell you what LED is. LED (Light Emitting Diode) is made up of semiconductor diodes that emit light.

These solid state devices do not have moving parts or fragile glass components. They don't even have any mercury, toxic gases or filaments that are being used in fluorescent bulbs.

So, there is nothing to break, shatter or leak that can harm you or your environment.

Now, we come to the various benefits of LED flood light fixtures. The foremost advantage of using LED flood lights is their energy efficiency.

They consume much less electricity than the incandescent bulbs leading to lower electricity bills.

Secondly, it offers a long lifespan that is approximately 11 years for 12 hours a day. You may consider 50 incandescent bulbs for one LED approximately.

Hence, lower replacement costs and lesser e-waste to be dumped into landfills.

Another benefit of LED tube light is low heat production that is ultimately good for the environment and your plants, if this type of lights are installed in the garden area.

Apart from the energy conservation and environmental benefits, a major advantage of using LED light bulbs is the aesthetic appeal it adds to your property.

Implanting right style of flood light at the right place, you can make your outdoor area look as magnificent and beautiful as possible.

These lights are also being used inside the buildings in the form of LED tube lights. They are popularly used in the bathroom, drawing room and living room where you require to create a soothing ambiance and do not require bright light to do eye-intensive work.

Other benefits include lower maintenance cost, easy and flexible installation and ultra high efficiency. Also, LED flood light fixtures do not cause eye fatigue and helps protect eye health.

What Are The Advantages Of LED Light Tubes?

LED light tubes are the latest trend in the lighting industry, and they come equipped with great features.

These lights are better substitutes to fluorescent lights; with products like Flexible LED as well as LED T5 and LED T8 tubes

LED fluorescent lights can also be used both in a working environment and at home. They are particularly better than other traditional lighting in terms of energy consumption, durability, brightness and maintenance costs.

These lights are in fact safer to use. There is no toxic material (like mercury) in LED light tubes, unlike fluorescent.

Mercury dust contained in fluorescent tubes pose serious health threat to anybody exposed to it, especially those who work with them; like electricians.

A broken fluorescent tube in a room releases mercury into the air, and the mercury could last for up to four hours in the air. Mercury is capable of causing asthma and some other respiratory problems.

But when LED are used, these health concerns are removed. LED light bulbs are also easier to install compared to fluorescent bulbs.

You do not need to use ballast, just fix the LED light bulbs into sizes T5 and T8 sockets used for fluorescent tubes.

As energy-efficient as fluorescent light lamps were considered to be in the past, these light tubes have surpassed them when it comes to energy consumption efficiency.

The fact that LED consume less energy which makes them great lighting alternatives for use in corporate organizations and at homes as this would help reduce the electricity bill payable for putting lights on by up to half.

They are also useful in stemming the rising trend of global warming. LED tube lights use only about 30 percent of energy that fluorescent bulbs use to produce a particular level of brightness.

They also save you money because they last much longer than fluorescent tubes; this is made possible by the more reliable solid state lighting that LED light tubes are.

The flickering that is sometimes experienced when a fluorescent light bulb is switched on is a big benefit for fluorescents. This flickering has been proven to be capable of causing headaches to those in its vicinity.

The micro-pulse wavelength being emitted by the flickering fluorescent bulb is said to be responsible for such headaches.

On the other hand, LED do not flicker when switched on, thereby nullifying all concerns about experiencing headaches and disorientations.

LED light tubes produce uniform light output, unlike fluorescent bulbs that sometimes dim out as they develop hot spots capable of causing eye strain.

The heat generated by fluorescent tube is responsible for these hot spots which could make the tube fuse quickly.

Although some people consider LED to be rather too expensive when acquiring them, but if you look at it in the long run, you'd discover them to be the the less expensive lighting alternatives.

The Things To Consider When You Purchase LED Fluorescent Lights?

Are you buying LED fluorescent lights?  If you are in the process of looking to purchase some LED lights for your warehouse it can prove quite challenging as there are so many different kinds to choose from.

Before you go and invest money in such items it would be a good idea to learn more about just what you can buy. The best place for carrying out this kind of research is of course online.

Today as you will see there are plenty of places online that offer advice and information with regards to LED lighting. So being able to make a more informed decision with regards to the kind of lighting you should be getting becomes a lot easier.

However when looking to purchasing these kinds of lights there are several things that you will need to take into consideration first.

Below we take a look at just what some of these considerations are. If you keep in mind the things that we discuss below, then purchasing the best possible LED tube lights for your warehouse is going to prove less of a challenge.

Firstly, when you are trying to decide what size light to buy you probably need to be looking for ones that will be able to light a room sufficiently where they are to be installed.

In order to find out what size is required you should look at how many watts the lights are using. Remember the more watts the light uses to provide light then the much brighter it will be.

Secondly
, the next thing to be considered when it comes to buying any kind of LED lights is what sort of color you want yours to emit. Again this is something that will affect how bright the light they emit is.

Additionally, of course you will need to make sure that the lights you select are ones that are suitable for the way in which you intend to use them.

Thirdly
, another thing that will of course determine what sorts of LED fluorescent lights you buy for your warehouse is how much you can afford to realistically spend on your purchase.

What is important to remember is that if you are willing to spend more on your purchase then the light they emit will be far better.

Of course you could if you wanted to purchase the lights you need online and this could actually help to reduce the costs of them.

However, remember when buying LED light tubes online the sellers usually act as a middleman for the light manufacturer and will not have the overheads of a conventional store.

That is why any savings that they make they will then pass on to you in the form of discounts.

LED Tube Light Installation Made Simple

Installing LED tube lights is a great way to save money on electricity and get potentially hazardous fluorescent lights out of your home or office.

However, most LED light bulbs on the market today can not just be directly installed in an existing fluorescent fixture.

You will have to make some simple modifications to the fixture to properly install the bulbs. The good thing is that installing this type tube light in an existing fluorescent fixture is relatively simple.

In addition, you should be able to buy fixtures especially designed for LED tube lights in the near future, and they should actually be cheaper than the equivalent fluorescent fixtures.

Fluorescent fixtures
are designed to support a specific types and size of fluorescent tube. A fluorescent tube is incorporated into a fluorescent lighting system which consists of two or three main components: (1) the fluorescent lamp (fluorescent bulb or tube), (2) the ballast, and (3) the starter system.

In addition, the system for a tube lamp includes a lamp holder and a switch. Depending on the particular fluorescent lighting system, the starter may be a replaceable component, a starter may not be required, or the starter function may be integrated into the ballast.

Make sure that the LED replacement tube lights are the correct size for the fixture. Also, always remember that when servicing a fluorescent fixture or lamp for any reason, electrical power to the entire fixture should be disconnected.

This is not always practical in situations where a large number of fixtures are controlled from the same power control (such as in open office areas). In these cases, insulating gloves and a nonmetallic ladder should be used if the fixtures must be serviced when power is present.

Once the old bulbs are removed from the lamp holders and the electricity to the fixture is turned off, you will probably have to remove the reflector that is located behind the bulbs and provides a housing for the wiring and ballast that lie behind it.

In fact, It is fairly easy to remove the reflector or cover, however if it is not clear how to do this, you should consult the documentation from the fixture supplier.

Depending on how much wire you have to work with, it is a good idea to leave long enough wires leading out of the ballast to be able to reconnect the ballast with wire nuts.

This is only when you ever want to convert the fixture back to use for fluorescent LED light tubes or want to use the ballast somewhere else.

Typically, the ballast will have two screws or bolts holding it in place in the fixture, and these can be removed using a screwdriver or pair of pliers, as appropriate. The ballast should be disposed of in accordance with local regulations as should the old fluorescent bulbs.

It is because the fluorescent bulbs contain a small amount of highly-toxic mercury, these lights should be treated as hazardous waste and disposed of as soon as possible.

Unlike fluorescent bulbs which do not have a top or bottom, an LED tube light will have an obvious top and bottom, with metallic heat sink located on the backside of the tube and the LEDs visible under a lens on the side that will be aimed towards the area to be illuminated.

Place the cover back on the fixture (if there was one) and turn on the electricity. Turn on the switch and if you have done everything properly, you should have as good or better lighting using approximately half the electricity and lasting as long as 50,000 hours or more.

The Basic Information On LED Tube Lights

Fluorescent lighting have become more popular in the households and offices. However, recent researches have found out that these can be very harmful to the environment.

There are chances for the occurrence of severe head aches in the people who are exposed to fluorescent light tubes for a long time.

These lights contain mercy and lead that are risky to the environment. Even when these lights are disposed they remain as harmful toxic waste.

LED tube light that does not emit mercury or any other kind of toxic gases is the new innovation which is popularly recommended to replace usual traditional bulbs and other fluorescent light tubes.

LEDs are more environment friendly and cost effective. They consume less that 60% of the energy consumed by incandescent lamps. These will have a longer lifespan and also it will remain intact for 50,000 to 100,000 hours.

LED is a light emitting diode. It is a semiconductor diode which emits light. They are manufactured using a different technology as compared to fluorescent lights.

Fluorescent lights use electrodes and a combination of argon and mercury to produce light. However, LEDs are small bulbs which produce light. The movement of electrons in the diode helps in producing light.

A LED tube is made of hundreds of LEDs. The indicator bulbs in the LED tube lights produce low intensity red light or bright light.

The LEDs are popularly used by commercial and motor industries, agriculture sector and also in the traffic lights. It is a simple task to install this tube. It is designed for a drop in replacement for fluorescent tubes. However sometimes a bit of modifications need to be made.

The cost of the light tube is slightly expensive when compared to fluorescent lights. The cost is usually $30 to $50.

As the life span of these lights is more, it will not be a loss even if you spend these much money. These light tubes come in various sizes and colors. The available sizes are 2, 4 or 6 feet.

And these light tubes can be disposed like any other waste. They can be bought along with new fixtures. These do not require ballasts which are commonly used by fluorescent light tubes and so when these tubes are fixed ballasts are to be removed.

With all these benefits, LED tube lights are gaining popularity over the traditional bulbs. These are efficient energy savers and consumer friendly.

The Installation Of LED Tube Lights

By installing LED tube lights, you can save money on electricity bills and get potentially risky fluorescent lights out of your home or office.

But, most LED light tubes on the market nowadays can not be directly installed in an existing fluorescent fixture.

You will have to make some simple modifications to the fixture in order to properly install the bulbs.  Installing a LED tube light in an existing fluorescent fixture is quite simple.

Additionally, you should be able to purchase fixtures especially designed for LED light tubes in the near future, and they should actually be less expensive than the equivalent fluorescent fixtures.

This article will provide a brief overview explaining what you need to know in order to install the new energy-saving fluorescent tube lights in an existing tube lighting fixture.

Fluorescent fixtures
are designed to support a specific types and size of fluorescent tube.

A fluorescent tube is incorporated into a fluorescent lighting system which consists of two or three main components:

(1) the fluorescent lamp (fluorescent bulb or tube)

(2) the ballast, and

(3) the starter system.

Additionally, the system for a tube light includes a lamp holder and a switch.

Depending on the particular fluorescent lighting system, the starter may be a replaceable component, a starter may not be needed, or the starter function may be integrated into the ballast.

The starting function may also rely on the physical design of the fixture. To retrofit a tube light fixture to support LED tube lights, the ballast (and the starter if a separate one is present) must be disconnected.

A few simple tools are needed, including a wire cutter and wire stripper (often incorporated into the same tool), a pair of pliers, a screwdriver, and a few wire nuts for reconnecting the wires once you have removed the ballast.

Once the old lamps are removed from the lamp holders and the electricity to the fixture is turned off, you will probably have to remove the reflector that is located behind the bulbs.

This provides a housing for the wiring and ballast that lie behind it. Typically, it is quite simple to remove the reflector or cover, however if it is not clear how to do this, you should consult the documentation from the fixture manufacturer.

Once the ballast have been removed and the wires reconnected to complete a circuit for each bulb, replace the reflector or cover over the wiring and the area where the ballast was located, and the LED tube lamps can be inserted in the end sockets.

Unlike fluorescent bulbs which do not have a top or bottom, a LED tube light will have an obvious top and bottom, with metallic heatsink located on the backside of the tube and the LEDs visible under a lens on the side that will be aimed towards the area to be illuminated.

Place the cover back on the fixture (if there was one) and turn on the electricity. Turn on the switch and if you have done everything properly, you should have as good or better lighting using approximately half the electricity and lasting as long as 50,000 hours or more.

What Are LED Tube Lights

Have you heard of LED tube lights?  Adequate lighting is very important for a working environment, a cooking environment, and just for simple living.

Everybody complains after Daylight Savings Time ends that it's so dark so early and they just cannot wait to get to bed - that statement itself should reflect how important lighting is in our lives.

There are programs available which will definitely change the tone and intensity of the light on your computer at a certain time during the day to reduce strain on your eyes and get you more ready for bed.

Some scientists utilize light cycling to bring an animal into heat, by affecting their photo period. It then makes sense to buy the best lighting possible and to adequately research your alternatives.

The lights are available in all colors, shapes and types. The most popular light is an incandescent light bulb, which has changed very little since Thomas Edison invented it back in the 1800s.

An incandescent light bulb is made up of a glass housing, molded into its characteristic shape in a process called glass blowing, and a coiled tungsten wire.

The coiled tungsten wire is what absorbs the electricity supplied to it, and glows red hot. The energy is then released as heat and light. Fluorescent light bulbs came onto the scene and brought with them a new shape.

Fluorescent light tubes were available in long tubes, commonly seen in high bay lights, embedded into a ceiling, or they were available in the flattened light bulbs now often seen in newly renovated kitchens.

Fluorescent light bulbs contained a mercury and argon gas that became excited when electricity flowed through, leading to a release of ultraviolet light that was absorbed by the fluorescent phosphorus coating on the inside of the light, which would then release light in the visible spectrum.

Also, LED light bulbs were invented and are quickly becoming popular. LEDs are available as LED tube lights, light bulbs, and flood lights for sport fields. LEDs do not possess dangerous gases like light tubes and they do not release as much heat as an incandescent bulb, making them incredibly efficient.

These type of lights are wonderful for someone renovating a house, or an office or building. While LED tube lights may be more costly to purchase initially, they quickly pay for themselves in the long run.

The problem with conventional light bulbs and compact fluorescent lights is the manner in which they release their energy. Because of how they release their energy, they waste a lot of it as heat.

That is why not only a higher electrical bill for less light, but also an increased electric bill so as to run a fan or air conditioning unit to keep the room or building cool.

Additionally, these LED tubes bring with them many more utility rebates. This is because of how green they are, an effect of the reduced amount of carbon monoxide they use, and how efficiently they use the electricity given to them.
