Should You Use LED Fluorescent Lights

Will you be using LED fluorescent lights? Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) along with more traditional fluorescent lamps are now being aggressively marketed as environmentally friendly due to their reduced electricity consumption.

Indeed, widespread replacement of incandescent bulbs with CFLs will greatly reduce electricity demand; however, there are safety issues that ultimately contribute to making LED tube lights the superior choice.

Understanding fluorescent lighting risks can help ensure that fluorescent light bulbs are used and disposed of safely while explaining why LED fluorescent light is the safest and most eco-friendly lighting choice in the long run.

Mercury

The most commonly cited fluorescent lighting hazard is mercury. Fluorescent and CFL bulbs contain a small amount of mercury and are identified with the elemental symbol Hg.

When these bulbs are cold, some of the mercury in the lamp is in liquid form, but while the lamp is operating or when the lamp is hot, most of the mercury is in a gaseous or vapor form.

Disposed of improperly, mercury can contaminate buildings, landfills, lakes, animals, fish, birds, humans, crops and rivers. In the US, the EPA has ordered waste handlers to treat fluorescent lamps as hazardous waste.

With such a classification, fluorescent lamps are not to be sent to landfills, but instead are to be sent to recycling centers that break the lamps under special conditions and safely recover the mercury.

Up to 95 percent of the mercury contained in CFLs can be recovered if the bulbs are recycled properly.

The Dimmers

To use a CFL on a dimmer switch, you must buy a bulb that's specifically made to work with dimmers (check the package). GE makes a dimming compact fluorescent light bulb (called the Energy Smart Dimming Spirals) that is specially designed for use with dimming switches.

I don't recommend using regular compact fluorescent bulbs with dimming switches, since this can shorten bulb life. Using a regular compact fluorescent bulb with a dimmer will also nullify the bulb's warranty.

Ultraviolet Light

A long-term hazard from fluorescent lighting is the shorter-wave ultraviolet (UV) light that escapes the lamp. No matter how well crafted, some short-wave ultraviolet light escapes from every fluorescent lamp made.

Short-wave UV light is one of the damaging components of the suns rays that reach the surface of the Earth, which can directly damage organic tissue and trigger cancers. Short-wave UV light can also age or damage paper, fabrics and other materials.

Flicker Effect

Flicker and glare from fluorescent lights can also cause headaches and have been found to impact learning and ability to concentrate. Although humans cannot see fluorescent lights flicker, the sensory system in some individuals can somehow detect the flicker.

Ever since fluorescent lighting was introduced in workplaces, there have been complaints about headaches, eye strain and general eye discomfort.

These complaints have been associated with the light flicker from fluorescent lights. When compared to regular fluorescent lights with magnetic ballasts, the use of high frequency electronic ballasts fluorescent lights resulted in more than a 50% drop in complaints of eye strain and headaches.

As you can see, LED tube lights seem to be the more eco-friendly lighting and safer choice preferred by many people.

How Are LED Light Bulbs Made - Part 2

Let's take a look at the manufacturing steps for typical LED light bulbs meant to replace a standard incandescent bulb with an Edison Screw.

You will see that it is a very different process from the highly automated processes used to manufacture our familiar incandescent bulbs.

And, despite what you might imagine, people are still very much a necessary part of manufacturing process, and not just for testing and Quality Assurance either.

Once the larger sheets of LED circuit boards have passed through a solder reflow oven (a hot air furnace that melts the solder paste), they are broken up into the individual small circuit boards and power wires manually soldered on.

The small power supply housed in the body of the light bulb goes through a similar process, or may be delivered complete from another factory.

In either case, the manufacturing steps are the same; first the PCB passes through SMT lines, then it goes to a manual dual in-line package (DIP) assembly line where a long row of factory workers add one component at a time.

DIP refers to the two parallel rows of leads projecting from the sides of the package. DIP components include all integrated chips and chip sockets.

While LED lights burn several times longer than incandescent or CFLs and require less than half the energy, they need some form of passive heatsink keep the high-power LEDs from overheating.

The LED circuit board, which is made from 1.6-2mm thick aluminum, will conduct the heat from the dozen or so LED elements to the metal heatsink frame and thus keep temperatures in check.

Aluminum-backed PCBs are sometimes called "metal core printed circuit boards," and though made of a conductive material the white coating is electrically isolating. The aluminum PCB is screwed in place within the heatsink which forms the lower half of the LED light bulb.

After this, the power connector board is fixed in place with adhesive. The small power supply converts 120/240V AC mains power to a lower voltage (12V or 24V), it fits in the cavity behind the aluminum PCB.

Next, the completed LED lighting bulb is sent to burn-in testing and quality control. The burn-in test typically lasts for 30 minutes. The completed light bulb is then powered up to see if it is working properly and burned in for 30 minutes.

There is also a high-voltage leakage and breakdown test and power consumption and power factor test. Samples from the production run are tested for high-voltage leaks, power consumption, and power factor (efficiency).

The finished bulbs pass through one final crimping step as the metal socket base is crimped in place, are bar-coded and identified with lot numbers.

External safety labels are applied and the bulb is inked with information, such as brand and model number. Finally, all that's left is to fix on the clear plastic LED cover which is glued in place.

After a final check to make sure all the different parts of the LED lights are tight, then it is packed into individual boxes, and bulbs are shipped out.

So, if you have wondered why LED light bulbs are so expensive today, this explanation of how they are manufactured and how that compares to the manufacture of traditional light bulbs should help.

However, it also reveals why the cost will fall pretty dramatically over the next few years.

How Are LED Light Bulbs Made - Part 1

To understand just how revolutionary LED light bulbs are as well as why they are still expensive, it is instructive to look at how they are manufactured and to compare this to the manufacture of incandescent light bulbs.

This article explores how incandescent light bulbs are made and then contrasts that process with a description of the typical manufacturing process for LED lighting bulbs.

Initially produced by hand, light bulb manufacturing is now almost entirely automated. First, the filament is manufactured using a process known as drawing, in which tungsten is mixed with a binder material and pulled through a die (a shaped orifice) into a fine wire.

Next, the wire is wound around a metal bar called a mandrel in order to mold it into its proper coiled shape, and then it is heated in a process known as annealing, softening the wire and makes its structure more uniform..

Secondly, the coiled filament is attached to the lead-in wires. The lead-in wires have hooks at their ends which are either pressed over the end of the filament or, in larger bulbs, spot-welded.

Thirdly, the glass bulbs or casings are produced using a ribbon machine. After heating in a furnace, a continuous ribbon of glass moves along a conveyor belt. Precisely aligned air nozzles blow the glass through holes in the conveyor belt into molds, creating the casings.

Fourthly, the base of the bulb is also constructed using molds. It is made with indentations in the shape of a screw so that it can easily fit into the socket of a light fixture.

Fifthly, once the filament, base, and bulb are made, they are fitted together by machines. First, the filament is mounted to the stem assembly, with its ends clamped to the two lead-in wires.

Next, the air inside the bulb is evacuated, and the casing is filled with the argon and nitrogen mixture.

The computer industry is well suited to manufacture LED lighting bulbs. The process isn't a whole lot different than making a computer motherboard. The companies making the LEDs themselves are generally not in the lighting business.

LED lamps themselves are expensive in part because it takes a number of LEDs to get wide-area illumination instead of a narrow beam, and the assembly cost adds to the overall price.

In addition to this, the assemblies consisting of arrays of LEDs create more opportunities for product defects.

LED light bulb consists of four essential components: an LED circuit board, a heat sink, a power supply, and a shell. The lights start out as bare printed circuit boards (PCB) and high luminance LED elements arrive from separate factories which specialize in making those components.

LED elements themselves create a bit of heat, so the PCB used in lighting fixtures is special. Instead of the standard non-conductive sandwich of epoxy and fiberglass, the circuit board is laid out on a thin sheet of aluminum which acts as a heat sink.

LED Light Tubes Can Save You Some Money

LED light tubes are one of the ways that you can abide by EPA recommendations for energy savings.

One of the ways that the EPA recommends to increase the efficiency of your home, business, or other buildings, is to retrofit your entire lighting system.

However, this is not possible in many homes or budgets. With the use of LED light bulbs, the retrofit can be much cheaper and much easier.

It is estimated that the lighting in your home uses about 20% of your entire energy consumption. If you can bring this down to a lower level you are able to save on your yearly budget.

Many people feel that they can not possibly cut down on their lights as they need a certain amount in order to do work around the home or office. However, with better design you can use less wattage and still see clearly.

LED tube lights give off a bright light from the 12 LED lighting bulbs housed within them. Instead of doing a complete retrofit of your light receptacles and wiring, simply install some tube lights for your lighting needs.

The LED tube retrofit is not only for the energy, or the money, savings. It is also for the health of the people within your home or within your office buildings.

The light that a building has will directly affect the mood, the comfort, the stress, the health and safety of the people who are there.

With harsh lighting people are more likely to suffer health problems. The soft lighting of the LED light bulbs contributes to a healthier lifestyle for everyone within the home.

While the LED tube light is not a main lighting feature, it is a great way to retrofit your home's lighting system in many areas where harsh lighting is not needed.

This might be in the closet. Or, you may place the LED lights in a half bathroom, or in a mud room entrance way. Larger LED lighting bulbs can be found in kitchens, in bedrooms, and in garages.

Retrofitting your home, or parts of your home, with new these type of lighting will help you not only to save money, but also see better health results.

In many instances, the retrofit is made simple by installing a tube light. Your savings are not only in the lights, but also in cooling costs. Since LED light tubes do not give off heat, there is no need for excessive cooling.

What Are The Benefits Of Installing LED Flood Light Fixtures

If you are willing to lighten up your outdoor space or lawn area, you should definitely consider installing LED flood light fixtures. These lights offer an aesthetic lighting experience with environmentally friendly features .

Before describing the various benefits of LED flood lighting bulbs, let us tell you what LED is. LED (Light Emitting Diode) is made up of semiconductor diodes that emit light.

These solid state devices do not have moving parts or fragile glass components. They don't even have any mercury, toxic gases or filaments that are being used in fluorescent bulbs.

So, there is nothing to break, shatter or leak that can harm you or your environment.

Now, we come to the various benefits of LED flood light fixtures. The foremost advantage of using LED flood lights is their energy efficiency.

They consume much less electricity than the incandescent bulbs leading to lower electricity bills.

Secondly, it offers a long lifespan that is approximately 11 years for 12 hours a day. You may consider 50 incandescent bulbs for one LED approximately.

Hence, lower replacement costs and lesser e-waste to be dumped into landfills.

Another benefit of LED tube light is low heat production that is ultimately good for the environment and your plants, if this type of lights are installed in the garden area.

Apart from the energy conservation and environmental benefits, a major advantage of using LED light bulbs is the aesthetic appeal it adds to your property.

Implanting right style of flood light at the right place, you can make your outdoor area look as magnificent and beautiful as possible.

These lights are also being used inside the buildings in the form of LED tube lights. They are popularly used in the bathroom, drawing room and living room where you require to create a soothing ambiance and do not require bright light to do eye-intensive work.

Other benefits include lower maintenance cost, easy and flexible installation and ultra high efficiency. Also, LED flood light fixtures do not cause eye fatigue and helps protect eye health.

There are many vendors who supply various types of lights at reasonable prices. And they are available in various designs with generally 10W, 20W and 30W power specification.

In the case of LED lights, T8 tubes are more popular. While there are many design options available in the market, you need to choose the one that suits your needs and budget.

At last, we can say that LED lighting is definitely a great way to add creativity and flavor to the outdoor space. Additionally, the energy savings make it an attractive option for the same.

What Are Pros and Cons Of Using LED Lighting?

LED T8 light tubes  were originally used as a replacement for incandescent indicators and displays in laboratory equipment, etc. LED prices have only recently has dropped enough to make them viable for residential and commercial markets.

LED home lighting can include anything from outdoor to Christmas lights. With the current looming energy crisis, and the pressure which was exerted on governments and businesses alike for more sustainable energy solutions, these  tube lights have a bright future in space lighting solutions.

Firstly, the advantages of using LED lights are that they are far more efficient than any other lighting alternative commercially available at the moment. LED light bulbs have a 100,000 hour lifespan, and will last for 11 years at continuous operation, or 22 years at 50% operation.

Compare this to the approximate lifespan of 5,000 hours for an incandescent light bulb and 10,000 hours for a fluorescent light. Many businesses find the lifespan of these light bulbs very attractive.

Just imagine if you only have to change the signage on a business property once every 11 years. With incandescent and fluorescent bulbs, the true cost of the bulb should include the labor expense and time needed to replace them. These lights virtually eliminate lighting maintenance costs.

Secondly, by using LED lighting bulbs over conventional lighting the power consumption is definitely reduced. This type of light bulb is capable of converting 80% of the electrical energy used into light energy.

The remaining 20% electrical energy is lost as heat energy. Incandescent light bulbs only convert 20% of the electrical energy used into actual light energy, which means that a staggering 80% of electrical energy is lost as heat energy.

If you compare the 80% efficiency of LED light tubes with the 20% efficiency of incandescent lights, the optimal choice of light bulb is quite apparent.

The disadvantages of using LED T8 tube lights is that the primary limitation is the current high cost of these bulbs. Even though the cost of this type of light is steadily decreasing, replacing a 100W incandescent light bulb with an LED alternative can be a bit costly.

The startup cost may seem daunting, but these light bulbs pay for themselves over time since they can last for numerous years, and saves a lot of money in terms of electricity used.

For businesses, using LED lights makes a whole lot of sense since the reduced maintenance costs more than make up for the steep start-up cost.

What Are The Advantages Of LED Light Tubes?

LED light tubes are the latest trend in the lighting industry, and they come equipped with great features.

These lights are better substitutes to fluorescent lights; with products like Flexible LED as well as LED T5 and LED T8 tubes

LED fluorescent lights can also be used both in a working environment and at home. They are particularly better than other traditional lighting in terms of energy consumption, durability, brightness and maintenance costs.

These lights are in fact safer to use. There is no toxic material (like mercury) in LED light tubes, unlike fluorescent.

Mercury dust contained in fluorescent tubes pose serious health threat to anybody exposed to it, especially those who work with them; like electricians.

A broken fluorescent tube in a room releases mercury into the air, and the mercury could last for up to four hours in the air. Mercury is capable of causing asthma and some other respiratory problems.

But when LED are used, these health concerns are removed. LED light bulbs are also easier to install compared to fluorescent bulbs.

You do not need to use ballast, just fix the LED light bulbs into sizes T5 and T8 sockets used for fluorescent tubes.

As energy-efficient as fluorescent light lamps were considered to be in the past, these light tubes have surpassed them when it comes to energy consumption efficiency.

The fact that LED consume less energy which makes them great lighting alternatives for use in corporate organizations and at homes as this would help reduce the electricity bill payable for putting lights on by up to half.

They are also useful in stemming the rising trend of global warming. LED tube lights use only about 30 percent of energy that fluorescent bulbs use to produce a particular level of brightness.

They also save you money because they last much longer than fluorescent tubes; this is made possible by the more reliable solid state lighting that LED light tubes are.

The flickering that is sometimes experienced when a fluorescent light bulb is switched on is a big benefit for fluorescents. This flickering has been proven to be capable of causing headaches to those in its vicinity.

The micro-pulse wavelength being emitted by the flickering fluorescent bulb is said to be responsible for such headaches.

On the other hand, LED do not flicker when switched on, thereby nullifying all concerns about experiencing headaches and disorientations.

LED light tubes produce uniform light output, unlike fluorescent bulbs that sometimes dim out as they develop hot spots capable of causing eye strain.

The heat generated by fluorescent tube is responsible for these hot spots which could make the tube fuse quickly.

Although some people consider LED to be rather too expensive when acquiring them, but if you look at it in the long run, you'd discover them to be the the less expensive lighting alternatives.

The Things To Consider When You Purchase LED Fluorescent Lights?

Are you buying LED fluorescent lights?  If you are in the process of looking to purchase some LED lights for your warehouse it can prove quite challenging as there are so many different kinds to choose from.

Before you go and invest money in such items it would be a good idea to learn more about just what you can buy. The best place for carrying out this kind of research is of course online.

Today as you will see there are plenty of places online that offer advice and information with regards to LED lighting. So being able to make a more informed decision with regards to the kind of lighting you should be getting becomes a lot easier.

However when looking to purchasing these kinds of lights there are several things that you will need to take into consideration first.

Below we take a look at just what some of these considerations are. If you keep in mind the things that we discuss below, then purchasing the best possible LED tube lights for your warehouse is going to prove less of a challenge.

Firstly, when you are trying to decide what size light to buy you probably need to be looking for ones that will be able to light a room sufficiently where they are to be installed.

In order to find out what size is required you should look at how many watts the lights are using. Remember the more watts the light uses to provide light then the much brighter it will be.

Secondly
, the next thing to be considered when it comes to buying any kind of LED lights is what sort of color you want yours to emit. Again this is something that will affect how bright the light they emit is.

Additionally, of course you will need to make sure that the lights you select are ones that are suitable for the way in which you intend to use them.

Thirdly
, another thing that will of course determine what sorts of LED fluorescent lights you buy for your warehouse is how much you can afford to realistically spend on your purchase.

What is important to remember is that if you are willing to spend more on your purchase then the light they emit will be far better.

Of course you could if you wanted to purchase the lights you need online and this could actually help to reduce the costs of them.

However, remember when buying LED light tubes online the sellers usually act as a middleman for the light manufacturer and will not have the overheads of a conventional store.

That is why any savings that they make they will then pass on to you in the form of discounts.
