What Are Things You Need To Know About LED Lamps?

A LED lamp or a Light Emitting Diode lamp use light emitting diodes to produce light. These tube lamps are one of the most convenient alternatives for traditional bulbs.

The amount of light emitted by a single light emitting diode is very small as compared to compact fluorescent lamps and incandescent lamps.

So, multiple diodes are used for producing more light. A LED lamp operates on the basis of solid state lighting technology. The solid state technology involves the production of light from a solid object and not from vacuum or gas.

Different types of light emitting diodes used in these tube lamps are organic LEDs, polymer LEDs and conventional semiconductor light emitting diodes.

With the improvement in the diode technology, high power LEDs, with higher lumen output have become very popular.

High power commercial light emitting diode lamps can emit 7,500 lumens with 100 watts electrical power. Light emitting diodes operate on direct current or DC electrical power.

They can also operate on standard AC electrical power with the help of external or internal rectifier circuits. Light emitting diodes usually get damaged by functioning at high temperatures.

So, the LED lamps feature heat management elements, such as cooling fins and heat sinks. These heat management elements provide long service life to the LED light bulbs.

LED light bulbs have a variety of applications. Light emitting diode lamps are used for both special purpose and general lighting.

These lamps are widely used in commercial buildings, homes, small rooms, hallways, solar-powered gardens, gardening and agriculture industry. Also, they are used as reading lamps, traffic signal lights, bicycle lights, walkway lights and flashlights.

These lamps are also used as hanging decorative lights. You can use these lights to decorate your home during festivals and special occasions. For instance, you can use string of these lights for decorating your Christmas tree.

These light bulbs are available in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. They have become extremely popular due to their high energy efficiency, high stability, short response time, environment friendliness and cost effectiveness.

LED lamps have several benefits over the conventional incandescent lamps:

Energy Efficiency:

According to several reports LED tube lamps consume 50 to 80% less energy as compared to traditional light bulbs. These lamps produce more light with lesser electricity. Further, the efficiency of these lights is not affected by their shape or size.

Long Life Time:

These lamps have a long life time. These lamps last from 20,000 to 100,000 hours under proper voltage and current. Further, these lamps are very durable, rust proof and mechanically robust.

Further, these lights do not use mercury or any other toxic materials like traditional lamps. These eco-friendly lamps are fully recyclable and do not emit any harmful fumes.

How Are LED Light Bulbs Made - Part 2

Let's take a look at the manufacturing steps for typical LED light bulbs meant to replace a standard incandescent bulb with an Edison Screw.

You will see that it is a very different process from the highly automated processes used to manufacture our familiar incandescent bulbs.

And, despite what you might imagine, people are still very much a necessary part of manufacturing process, and not just for testing and Quality Assurance either.

Once the larger sheets of LED circuit boards have passed through a solder reflow oven (a hot air furnace that melts the solder paste), they are broken up into the individual small circuit boards and power wires manually soldered on.

The small power supply housed in the body of the light bulb goes through a similar process, or may be delivered complete from another factory.

In either case, the manufacturing steps are the same; first the PCB passes through SMT lines, then it goes to a manual dual in-line package (DIP) assembly line where a long row of factory workers add one component at a time.

DIP refers to the two parallel rows of leads projecting from the sides of the package. DIP components include all integrated chips and chip sockets.

While LED lights burn several times longer than incandescent or CFLs and require less than half the energy, they need some form of passive heatsink keep the high-power LEDs from overheating.

The LED circuit board, which is made from 1.6-2mm thick aluminum, will conduct the heat from the dozen or so LED elements to the metal heatsink frame and thus keep temperatures in check.

Aluminum-backed PCBs are sometimes called "metal core printed circuit boards," and though made of a conductive material the white coating is electrically isolating. The aluminum PCB is screwed in place within the heatsink which forms the lower half of the LED light bulb.

After this, the power connector board is fixed in place with adhesive. The small power supply converts 120/240V AC mains power to a lower voltage (12V or 24V), it fits in the cavity behind the aluminum PCB.

Next, the completed LED lighting bulb is sent to burn-in testing and quality control. The burn-in test typically lasts for 30 minutes. The completed light bulb is then powered up to see if it is working properly and burned in for 30 minutes.

There is also a high-voltage leakage and breakdown test and power consumption and power factor test. Samples from the production run are tested for high-voltage leaks, power consumption, and power factor (efficiency).

The finished bulbs pass through one final crimping step as the metal socket base is crimped in place, are bar-coded and identified with lot numbers.

External safety labels are applied and the bulb is inked with information, such as brand and model number. Finally, all that's left is to fix on the clear plastic LED cover which is glued in place.

After a final check to make sure all the different parts of the LED lights are tight, then it is packed into individual boxes, and bulbs are shipped out.

So, if you have wondered why LED light bulbs are so expensive today, this explanation of how they are manufactured and how that compares to the manufacture of traditional light bulbs should help.

However, it also reveals why the cost will fall pretty dramatically over the next few years.

How Are LED Light Bulbs Made - Part 1

To understand just how revolutionary LED light bulbs are as well as why they are still expensive, it is instructive to look at how they are manufactured and to compare this to the manufacture of incandescent light bulbs.

This article explores how incandescent light bulbs are made and then contrasts that process with a description of the typical manufacturing process for LED lighting bulbs.

Initially produced by hand, light bulb manufacturing is now almost entirely automated. First, the filament is manufactured using a process known as drawing, in which tungsten is mixed with a binder material and pulled through a die (a shaped orifice) into a fine wire.

Next, the wire is wound around a metal bar called a mandrel in order to mold it into its proper coiled shape, and then it is heated in a process known as annealing, softening the wire and makes its structure more uniform..

Secondly, the coiled filament is attached to the lead-in wires. The lead-in wires have hooks at their ends which are either pressed over the end of the filament or, in larger bulbs, spot-welded.

Thirdly, the glass bulbs or casings are produced using a ribbon machine. After heating in a furnace, a continuous ribbon of glass moves along a conveyor belt. Precisely aligned air nozzles blow the glass through holes in the conveyor belt into molds, creating the casings.

Fourthly, the base of the bulb is also constructed using molds. It is made with indentations in the shape of a screw so that it can easily fit into the socket of a light fixture.

Fifthly, once the filament, base, and bulb are made, they are fitted together by machines. First, the filament is mounted to the stem assembly, with its ends clamped to the two lead-in wires.

Next, the air inside the bulb is evacuated, and the casing is filled with the argon and nitrogen mixture.

The computer industry is well suited to manufacture LED lighting bulbs. The process isn't a whole lot different than making a computer motherboard. The companies making the LEDs themselves are generally not in the lighting business.

LED lamps themselves are expensive in part because it takes a number of LEDs to get wide-area illumination instead of a narrow beam, and the assembly cost adds to the overall price.

In addition to this, the assemblies consisting of arrays of LEDs create more opportunities for product defects.

A LED light bulb consists of four essential components: an LED circuit board, a heat sink, a power supply, and a shell. The lights start out as bare printed circuit boards (PCB) and high luminance LED elements arrive from separate factories which specialize in making those components.

LED elements themselves create a bit of heat, so the PCB used in lighting fixtures is special. Instead of the standard non-conductive sandwich of epoxy and fiberglass, the circuit board is laid out on a thin sheet of aluminum which acts as a heat sink.

LED Light Tubes Can Save You Some Money

LED light tubes are one of the ways that you can abide by EPA recommendations for energy savings.

One of the ways that the EPA recommends to increase the efficiency of your home, business, or other buildings, is to retrofit your entire lighting system.

However, this is not possible in many homes or budgets. With the use of LED light bulbs, the retrofit can be much cheaper and much easier.

It is estimated that the lighting in your home uses about 20% of your entire energy consumption. If you can bring this down to a lower level you are able to save on your yearly budget.

Many people feel that they can not possibly cut down on their lights as they need a certain amount in order to do work around the home or office. However, with better design you can use less wattage and still see clearly.

LED tube lights give off a bright light from the 12 LED lighting bulbs housed within them. Instead of doing a complete retrofit of your light receptacles and wiring, simply install some tube lights for your lighting needs.

The LED tube retrofit is not only for the energy, or the money, savings. It is also for the health of the people within your home or within your office buildings.

The light that a building has will directly affect the mood, the comfort, the stress, the health and safety of the people who are there.

With harsh lighting people are more likely to suffer health problems. The soft lighting of the LED light bulbs contributes to a healthier lifestyle for everyone within the home.

While the LED tube light is not a main lighting feature, it is a great way to retrofit your home's lighting system in many areas where harsh lighting is not needed.

This might be in the closet. Or, you may place the LED lights in a half bathroom, or in a mud room entrance way. Larger LED lighting bulbs can be found in kitchens, in bedrooms, and in garages.

Retrofitting your home, or parts of your home, with new these type of lighting will help you not only to save money, but also see better health results.

In many instances, the retrofit is made simple by installing a tube light. Your savings are not only in the lights, but also in cooling costs. Since LED light tubes do not give off heat, there is no need for excessive cooling.

What Are The Advantages Of LED Light Tubes?

LED light tubes are the latest trend in the lighting industry, and they come equipped with great features.

These lights are better substitutes to fluorescent lights; with products like Flexible LED as well as LED T5 and LED T8 tubes.

LED fluorescent lights can also be used both in a working environment and at home. They are particularly better than other traditional lighting in terms of energy consumption, durability, brightness and maintenance costs.

These lights are in fact safer to use. There is no toxic material (like mercury) in LED light tubes, unlike fluorescent.

Mercury dust contained in fluorescent tubes pose serious health threat to anybody exposed to it, especially those who work with them; like electricians.

A broken fluorescent tube in a room releases mercury into the air, and the mercury could last for up to four hours in the air. Mercury is capable of causing asthma and some other respiratory problems.

But when LED are used, these health concerns are removed. LED light bulbs are also easier to install compared to fluorescent bulbs.

You do not need to use ballast, just fix the LED light bulbs into sizes T5 and T8 sockets used for fluorescent tubes.

As energy-efficient as fluorescent light lamps were considered to be in the past, these light tubes have surpassed them when it comes to energy consumption efficiency.

The fact that LED consume less energy which makes them great lighting alternatives for use in corporate organizations and at homes as this would help reduce the electricity bill payable for putting lights on by up to half.

They are also useful in stemming the rising trend of global warming. LED tube lights use only about 30 percent of energy that fluorescent bulbs use to produce a particular level of brightness.

They also save you money because they last much longer than fluorescent tubes; this is made possible by the more reliable solid state lighting that LED light tubes are.

The flickering that is sometimes experienced when a fluorescent light bulb is switched on is a big benefit for fluorescents. This flickering has been proven to be capable of causing headaches to those in its vicinity.

The micro-pulse wavelength being emitted by the flickering fluorescent bulb is said to be responsible for such headaches.

On the other hand, LED do not flicker when switched on, thereby nullifying all concerns about experiencing headaches and disorientations.

LED light tubes produce uniform light output, unlike fluorescent bulbs that sometimes dim out as they develop hot spots capable of causing eye strain.

The heat generated by fluorescent tube is responsible for these hot spots which could make the tube fuse quickly.

Although some people consider LED to be rather too expensive when acquiring them, but if you look at it in the long run, you'd discover them to be the the less expensive lighting alternatives.

LED Tube Light Installation Made Simple

Installing LED tube lights is a great way to save money on electricity and get potentially hazardous fluorescent lights out of your home or office.

However, most LED light bulbs on the market today can not just be directly installed in an existing fluorescent fixture.

You will have to make some simple modifications to the fixture to properly install the bulbs. The good thing is that installing this type tube light in an existing fluorescent fixture is relatively simple.

In addition, you should be able to buy fixtures especially designed for LED tube lights in the near future, and they should actually be cheaper than the equivalent fluorescent fixtures.

Fluorescent fixtures
are designed to support a specific types and size of fluorescent tube. A fluorescent tube is incorporated into a fluorescent lighting system which consists of two or three main components: (1) the fluorescent lamp (fluorescent bulb or tube), (2) the ballast, and (3) the starter system.

In addition, the system for a tube lamp includes a lamp holder and a switch. Depending on the particular fluorescent lighting system, the starter may be a replaceable component, a starter may not be required, or the starter function may be integrated into the ballast.

Make sure that the LED replacement tube lights are the correct size for the fixture. Also, always remember that when servicing a fluorescent fixture or lamp for any reason, electrical power to the entire fixture should be disconnected.

This is not always practical in situations where a large number of fixtures are controlled from the same power control (such as in open office areas). In these cases, insulating gloves and a nonmetallic ladder should be used if the fixtures must be serviced when power is present.

Once the old bulbs are removed from the lamp holders and the electricity to the fixture is turned off, you will probably have to remove the reflector that is located behind the bulbs and provides a housing for the wiring and ballast that lie behind it.

In fact, It is fairly easy to remove the reflector or cover, however if it is not clear how to do this, you should consult the documentation from the fixture supplier.

Depending on how much wire you have to work with, it is a good idea to leave long enough wires leading out of the ballast to be able to reconnect the ballast with wire nuts.

This is only when you ever want to convert the fixture back to use for fluorescent LED light tubes or want to use the ballast somewhere else.

Typically, the ballast will have two screws or bolts holding it in place in the fixture, and these can be removed using a screwdriver or pair of pliers, as appropriate. The ballast should be disposed of in accordance with local regulations as should the old fluorescent bulbs.

It is because the fluorescent bulbs contain a small amount of highly-toxic mercury, these lights should be treated as hazardous waste and disposed of as soon as possible.

Unlike fluorescent bulbs which do not have a top or bottom, an LED tube light will have an obvious top and bottom, with metallic heat sink located on the backside of the tube and the LEDs visible under a lens on the side that will be aimed towards the area to be illuminated.

Place the cover back on the fixture (if there was one) and turn on the electricity. Turn on the switch and if you have done everything properly, you should have as good or better lighting using approximately half the electricity and lasting as long as 50,000 hours or more.

However, it can also become a major contributor to overhead expenses.

One thing is, you do not need to fret because a new technology can be your saviour.  In fact, you can use LEDs for your commercial lighting needs.

It's almost difficult to talk about energy-efficient, low-cost, and high-performing commercial lighting without mentioning the advantages of light emitting diode (LED).

Perhaps, your business has tried LED's competitors which are: fluorescent, incandescent, halogen, and the like. Now, let us see what can LED offer:

Newer Technology

The LED technology is generally quite new. Although it was discovered in 1906, it was only in 1960s that it got a practical purpose and only recently that it became so popular.

Nowadays, it is used for variety of purposes-from mobile phone lights to heavy-duty commercial lightings. Incidentally, this technology will never be a hit without its proven advantages.

Reduces Energy Bills

Replacing your business's old lighting with LED will dramatically reduce your energy consumption by up to 90 percent.

Cooler

LED needs lesser electricity, as such emitting lesser heat. This is not only more comfortable to the touch, however it also help to keep the indoor temperature more stabilized.

Cheaper Maintenance

Since LED commercial lighting are more durable, annual maintenance costs will definitely also be lowered down from at least 70 percent up to 90 percent.

Longer Lifespan

LED have about 50,000 hours of life, which is 30 times longer as compared to halogen bulbs, and five times better as compared to the top notch fluorescent bulbs.

Non-Toxic

Fluorescent is known to have some mercury that can be very toxic if left exposed. LED commercial lightings do not have that.

Moreover, they don't have anything that can put anyone's health at risk, making LED the completely safe choice. Also, UV and infrared are not a problem with LED light fixtures.

Performance

Yes, it is never compromised with LED high bay lights. They are designed to be as bright as they should be. Manufacturers simply need to use more tiny LED light bulbs in the fixture to increase brightness.

However, too much brightness can be counter-productive for some. The good thing is that LED bay lights do come with dimmer control.

What Are The Distinctive Features Of LED Flood Lamps

All kinds of LED flood lamps have proven to give much better results as compared to the ordinary halogen or neon lights.

Just like most forms of LED Lightings, these lamps too have generated immense amount of popularity along with great reviews from its users since quite some time now.

These lamps are designed to give excellent brightness and radiance to the entire area surrounding it.

Nowadays LED lamp bulbs are used for a variety of purposes, be it as a security measure for lighting up the gateways of commercial and residential buildings, or as a safety measure on automobiles so as to avoid accidents by providing sufficient beam on roads, highways and freeways.

In spite of the fact that an LED flood lamp may appear as a bit pricier than the usual bulbs found in the market, there is still a heavy demand for the same that keeps increasing by the day.

The reason behind this phenomenon, is the number of distinctive features of this particular kind of lighting, in addition to a logical fact that a normal bulb has a shorter life span, where as an LED one would not only give you much brighter effect but also last for years depending upon the usage.

This saves you all the money you would otherwise have to bear on continuously purchasing a normal bulb time and time again, therefore it is better to spend one time on a single LED lamp bulb, as compared to a number of ordinary bulbs.

Another feature of this type of flood lamp is that it consumes much lesser energy and thus is extremely economical. They emit much lesser levels of heat thereby leading to lesser production of carbon or any other toxic gases in the atmosphere.

This further makes them environmental friendly and highly suitable for the health and well-being of human beings.

An individual can save considerable amount of expenses on his electricity bills by installing these lamps as compared to the normal ones.

Also these lamps can be availed in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors which further widens your choice to be able to install them at any location based on your requirements.

Another favorable aspect of LED flood lamps is that they can be installed in the simplest manner. This means that a person need not have to waste a lot of time and energy in its installation.

In addition to this the fact that all LED light bulbs last much longer than the normal ones further adds up to the convenience of not having to replace the old and install new ones on a frequent basis.

Also because these lamps would scatter a lot more glow and brightness than the normal bulbs, one may have to purchase and install just a limited amount to avail the best results which is also money saving feature for many.

LED Flood Lights - The 3 Tips

Flood lights are high-powered bulbs that can brighten up a huge area of outdoor or indoor space. These type of lights are permanently installed, and can last a long time. But they do require a great deal of electricity, hence making these flood lighting costly and impractical.

Still, many situations call for lighting that can only be given by such lights. The answer? LED flood lights. If you are switching to LED flood light bulbs from typical lamps, below are the top three tips that will assist you to boost cost-effectiveness and practicality of these lights.

Tip 1:

You will need to know about the conventional traditional lamps and LED lamps for what they really are; that is, the difference in electricity requirements, the space that can be lit, the lighting capacity, the lighting duration and so on. Such factors will greatly affect practicality and cost effectiveness.

Tip 2:

You need to know how to install the lights, or at least you will need to get somebody who can help you on this. LED light bulbs are much simpler to install compared to typical flood lamps, mainly because these are modern and come with instruction manuals.

Nevertheless, it is still advisable to hire an electrician to do this chore for you. Keep in mind that flood lights, if they are LED, fluorescent or incandescent, are still complicated and need great knowledge in the field of electrical engineering. An electrician would know how to set this up, among others.

Tip 3:

You will need to decide on the vastness of the space that has to be covered. If you are going for practicality, then you may need to buy fewer lamps. This is where the issue begins. You most likely already have the posts for the lamps, which are installed with the conventional fluorescent or incandescent bulbs.

The problem is that these posts are spaced according to the limited lighting capacity of the old lamps. For these LED lights, you would no longer require the same number of light bulbs installed.

Since such lamps will be able to light up a much bigger space, you can save a lot. It is entirely up to you if you really want to install the new lights on all posts. It's best to ask your electrician for advice regarding this matter.

Coming to realize the obvious benefits of LED flood lighting instead of traditional incandescent or fluorescent lamps, there is a lot of money to be saved if you switch now. To make this even easier and more practical, follow the three tips mentioned in this article!

Not only will be used be amazed at the number of different makes and models to choose from but how affordable they are.

However, before we take a look at the things to consider before you purchase these types of flood lights, let us take a look at the advantages of using them.

Advantage 1:

Compared to ordinary fluorescent lights you will find LED flood light is much more energy efficient.

These types of lights don't actually need to use as much power to produce the bright light that they do. So of course this then means that you won't need to use as much electricity to power them.

Advantage 2:

Tests carried out have shown that LED light bulbs are much more environmentally friendly. As already mentioned they use less electricity to power them so of course the amount of fossil fuels burned to create electricity is less.

Also these lights don't produce as much heat as traditional lights do so again not causing harm to our environment.

Advantage 3:

Although most people will think that LED flood light bulbs can be only used if they are powered by electricity.

However, this isn't the case there are now some types that allow you to provide the energy they need from the power of the sun as they are fitted with solar panels.

Advantage 4:

Even though these types of lights are actually new to the market they have been designed in such a way that are much easier to install than other forms of lights.

Advantage 5:

When it come to LED flood lights these are fitted with a diode rather than a filament or filled with inert gases.

So of course they are not releasing any of these toxic gases into the air that could actually prove harmful to you and others.

Is LED The New Source For Bay Light?

A LED bay light is just another great application of the LED technology. Short for light-emitting diode, it is a semiconductor that converts electricity to light through the fast motions of electron particles.

But, only now did LED resurfaced as a great technological innovation that has many practical applications. The LED technology is used for many other purposes; lighting just being one of them.

The use of these lights allow for contiguous and efficient lighting. The only problem is that the lights need to be generously interspersed. Otherwise the light will not reach far enough to illuminate the large space.

The brightness of the lighting system still depends on the number of bay lamps that are being installed. This directly translates to huge electrical consumptions.

It is not lost to many people that the typical halogen bulbs, even the fluorescent ones, are never cost-effective alternatives when it comes to electricity usage. The electrical consumptions of these old bulbs go off the roof, compared to commercial LED light fixtures.

One of the advantages of using these type of lighting is it's brightness. Having talked about the need for brightness in large areas such as stadiums and warehouses, it's self-evident that LEDs would definitely come in handy.

To say that this application of the light-emitting diode is good would be an understatement. The benefits are not only in terms of efficiency, but also in terms of savings.

A lot of people nowadays are switching to LED high bay light bulbs as this is more cost effective than the other options.

Such LED light bulbs are also much simpler to install compared to others. As the lamps are going to be brighter, so people only need to buy fewer lamps. That is why lesser amount of money will be spent on lamps.

These lamps can stay bright for quite a long time, even if they are turned on for longer hours during the night. The rest of the lamps can only be lit for a given number of hours.

So if it is required to light throughout the day and night, people have to purchase twice as many lights to light up interchangeably. But with LED, it is not necessary at all.

Comparison Between LED Light Bulbs And Compact Fluorescent

What about LED light bulbs and compact fluorescent bulbs?  In an effort to cut energy costs and "go green," many countries, including the United States, are either considering phasing out incandescent light bulbs or have already passed laws to ban them.

Many countries, including the United States, are either considering phasing out incandescent light bulbs or have already passed laws to ban them. As standard light bulbs go the way of the dinosaurs, consumers are left with just two viable alternatives, LED light bulbs and compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).

As LEDs are extremely energy efficient and can tolerate temperature variances and turbulence - all while lasting a long time - the quest began in an effort to create light bulbs by clustering numerous LED's together.

And it's worked. LED lighting bulbs are now being produced that boast exceptional energy efficiency. A 7-watt LED light bulb, for example, can now replace a 75-watt incandescent bulb. As you can guess, the potential savings in energy costs and greenhouse gasses is huge.

With claims that they can last up to 15 years and use 90% less energy than the traditional bulb, these bulbs seem to be a no-brainer at first glance. But problems are prominent and LED light bulbs currently come up short.

LED light bulbs are quite costly. In fact, most people balk at spending $35.00 to $125.00 for just one light bulb, even when it results in a notable reduction in energy bills. Considering most homes have 30-plus light bulbs and businesses have significantly more, switching to LEDs is simply not an affordable option.

LED lighting bulbs are not bright enough. While standard bulbs and CFLs illuminate light in all directions, the light from LED light bulbs is directed or focused, like a spotlight.

While this works well for situations such as reading, work areas, and accent lighting, it results in unsatisfactory illumination for general lighting needs.

Their light output quickly degrades. Unlike incandescent bulbs, which release their heat, LEDs contain their heat, which causes their light quality to degrade.

Even though heat syncs are added to redirect the heat to a circuit board, issues with temperature overload are still frequent. Tests have shown a loss of 50% of light output in 6 months.

Due to their brightness, stability and attractive pricing (not much more than incandescent bulbs) CFL's are currently the better choice for most homes and businesses. However, if you decide to take LEDs for a test drive, here are some tips:

Start out by trying just one of these light bulbs. You have to take time research and read consumer feedback and reviews. Weigh the pros and the cons.

Pay careful attention to warranties and guarantees from both the manufacturer and the store you buy from. Buy quality. Beware of the less expensive LED ones as they are often problematic.

As LED technology improves and the prices starts to reduce, LED light bulbs will be worth taking a second look at in the future. However for now, CFLs are clearly the better overall choice.
