Are LED Fluorescent Tubes Energy Saving?


Should you use LED fluorescent tubes? There are millions of general service fluorescent tubes in the market place today, until recently these were considered the most energy efficient lighting solution available. 

The downside to this form of lighting is that each tube contains a small amount of mercury vapour, a toxic heavy metal. 


This can provide not just a health risk when the tubes are broken, but can also accumulate in landfills before entering the water table or causing further pollution.


Fluorescent lamps use electricity to excite mercury vapour inside the glass tube and always require a ballast to regulate the flow of power through the lamp. A starter is in the circuit to heat the contact ends of the tube that ionizes the mercury vapour creating UV light. 

The inside of the tube is coated with a phosphor material that glows when exposed to the UV light produced by the mercury inside the fluorescent tube.

Recent developments in SMD (Surface Mount Diode) LED technology have now meant that LED fluorescent light tubes are now a reality. 

LEDs are a more efficient form of lighting product consisting of small chips of conductive material that release light when a current is applied to them. They contain no filaments and can produce up to 25 times more light per watt than conventional light bulbs.

They require far less energy in their manufacture than fluorescent tubes, and only 3% of the energy they will consume over their life expectancy is consumed in their manufacture, and they are also produced from non toxic materials. 

The tubes are made from polycarbonate, a material that is more robust and durable than glass, so accidents will not require special cleanup procedures.

While LED technology is more expensive than existing fluorescents at face value, they will last up to 10 times as long, while consuming 65% less energy. 


In most general purpose lighting applications they additional cost of the LED technology will more than pay for itself within the first 18 months.

The only drawback is the tighter beam angle of the LEDs, while some tubes are manufactured from a polycarbonate light diffusing material, others have a narrow focus which may not be suitable for replacing existing tubes. 


Many fluorescent fixtures are designed with reflectors that help to distribute the light from the tubes evenly in their intended environment. 

This is a problem similar to what was faced when compact fluorescents began replacing incandescent light bulbs, this is a problem that will soon be overcome and allow faster adoption of this emerging LED fluorescent tubes.

Should You Use LED Fluorescent Lights


Will you be using LED fluorescent lights? Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) along with more traditional fluorescent lamps are now being aggressively marketed as environmentally friendly due to their reduced electricity consumption. 

Indeed, widespread replacement of incandescent bulbs with CFLs will greatly reduce electricity demand; however, there are safety issues that ultimately contribute to making LED tube lights the superior choice. 


Understanding fluorescent lighting risks can help ensure that fluorescent light bulbs are used and disposed of safely while explaining why LED fluorescent light is the safest and most eco-friendly lighting choice in the long run.


Mercury

The most commonly cited fluorescent lighting hazard is mercury. Fluorescent and CFL bulbs contain a small amount of mercury and are identified with the elemental symbol Hg. 

When these bulbs are cold, some of the mercury in the lamp is in liquid form, but while the lamp is operating or when the lamp is hot, most of the mercury is in a gaseous or vapor form.

Disposed of improperly, mercury can contaminate buildings, landfills, lakes, animals, fish, birds, humans, crops and rivers. In the US, the EPA has ordered waste handlers to treat fluorescent lamps as hazardous waste. 

With such a classification, fluorescent lamps are not to be sent to landfills, but instead are to be sent to recycling centers that break the lamps under special conditions and safely recover the mercury. 

Up to 95 percent of the mercury contained in CFLs can be recovered if the bulbs are recycled properly.

The Dimmers

To use a CFL on a dimmer switch, you must buy a bulb that's specifically made to work with dimmers (check the package). GE makes a dimming compact fluorescent light bulb (called the Energy Smart Dimming Spirals) that is specially designed for use with dimming switches. 

I don't recommend using regular compact fluorescent bulbs with dimming switches, since this can shorten bulb life. Using a regular compact fluorescent bulb with a dimmer will also nullify the bulb's warranty.

Ultraviolet Light

A long-term hazard from fluorescent lighting is the shorter-wave ultraviolet (UV) light that escapes the lamp. No matter how well crafted, some short-wave ultraviolet light escapes from every fluorescent lamp made. 

Short-wave UV light is one of the damaging components of the suns rays that reach the surface of the Earth, which can directly damage organic tissue and trigger cancers. Short-wave UV light can also age or damage paper, fabrics and other materials.

Flicker Effect

Flicker and glare from fluorescent lights can also cause headaches and have been found to impact learning and ability to concentrate. Although humans cannot see fluorescent lights flicker, the sensory system in some individuals can somehow detect the flicker. 

Ever since fluorescent lighting was introduced in workplaces, there have been complaints about headaches, eye strain and general eye discomfort. 

These complaints have been associated with the light flicker from fluorescent lights. When compared to regular fluorescent lights with magnetic ballasts, the use of high frequency electronic ballasts fluorescent lights resulted in more than a 50% drop in complaints of eye strain and headaches.

As you can see, LED tube lights seem to be the more eco-friendly lighting and safer choice preferred by many people.

Is It Better To Use LED Fluorescent Light Tubes

LED light tubes consume much lesser power for a given level of illumination (light output), typically between 50% and 90% of the power required for ordinary bulbs so a 60W domestic light bulb can be replaced by an Energy Saving LED bulb drawing just 6 Watts. Are LED Fluorescent Tubes More Energy Efficient?

Until recently, traditional fluorescent light tubes were considered as the best energy efficient lighting available. But, the disadvantage to this type of lighting is that they do contain a small amount of mercury, a toxic heavy metal. As such, when the tubes are broken and it could prove to be a health risk.

Normally, the fluorescent light tubes use electricity to excite mercury vapour inside the glass tube and usually need a ballast to regulate the flow of power through the lamp. To heat the contact ends of the fluorescent tube, a starter is used in the circuit which ionizes the mercury vapour and thereby creating UV light. A phosphor material is coated in the inside of the tube which glows when it is exposed to UV light that was produced by the mercury in the fluorescent tube.

The LED fluorescent tube replacements are now a reality with the SMD (Surface Mount Diode) LED technology. They are a a lot more efficient form of lighting as compared to traditional tubes as they consist of small chips of conductive material which release light whenever a current is applied to them. They contain no filaments and produce maximum up to 25 times more light per watt than traditional light tubes.

Traditional fluorescent tubes require more energy in their manufacture than LED tube lights. Only 3% of the energy will be consumed when using LED fluorescent tubes and they are also produced from non toxic materials. They are made from polycarbonate, a material which is far more robust and durable than glass, as such when accidents occur, they will not need special cleanup procedures.

Although the existing fluorescent tubes cost lesser than the LED tubes, but they do not have a longer lifespan as compared to LED ones. In fact, with LED technology, they last 10 times more than the traditional ones while consuming 65% less energy.

The only disadvantage is the tighter beam angle of the LEDs, while some tubes are manufactured from a polycarbonate light diffusing material, others have a narrow focus that are probably not suitable for replacing existing tube lights.

As compared to LED tube lights, many traditional fluorescent tubes are designed with reflectors which assist to distribute the light from the tubes evenly in their environment. This is a problem quite similar to what the compact fluorescent tubes are facing when they began replacing incandescent light bulbs. Definitely, this is a problem which will soon be overcome. And this will allow faster adoption of this emerging lighting technology.

An incandescent light bulb is made up of a glass housing, molded into its characteristic shape in a process called glass blowing, and a coiled tungsten wire. The coiled tungsten wire is what absorbs the electricity supplied to it, and glows red hot. The energy is then released as heat and light. Fluorescent light bulbs came onto the scene and brought with them a new shape. 


Fluorescent lights were available in long tubes, commonly seen in high bay lights, embedded into a ceiling, or they were available in the flattened light bulbs now often seen in newly renovated kitchens. Fluorescent bulbs contained a mercury and argon gas which became excited when electricity flowed through, leading to a release of ultraviolet light which was absorbed by the fluorescent phosphorus coating on the inside of the light, which would then release light in the visible spectrum. 

Next, LED tube lights were invented and are quickly becoming popular. LEDs are available as LED fluorescent tubes, light bulbs, and flood lights for sport fields. They don't possess dangerous gases like fluorescent lights and they don't release as much heat as an incandescent bulb, making them incredibly efficient.

LED light tubes are great for any who wishes to renovate his house, or an office or a warehouse building. While LED lights may be more costly to buy initially, they quickly pay for themselves. The problem with incandescent light bulbs and compact fluorescent lights is the manner in which they release their energy. Due to how they release their energy, they waste a lot of it as heat.
