Are LED Lighting Tubes Better?


LED lighting tubes are truly the next generation technology which features numerous benefits not only to consumers for home LED lighting, but also to many businesss premises. 


LED lighting offers such benefits as a higher energy efficiency than CFLs and fluorescents, lower power consumption, lower maintenance costs, longer lifetime (50,000 hours compared to less than 10,000), durability and brighter light output than conventional fluorescent lighting.

Fluorescent lighting contains toxic materials such as mercury which is harmful to environment and human body. Did you know that if you drop or break a fluorescent bulb you must leave the room for 4 hours, due to the toxic materials floating in the air, which could cause respiratory damage, or Asthma in the long run for workers who have to deal with these fixtures daily. 

For quick installation, LED tube lighting can be placed and installed directly into existing fluorescent T5 and T8 sized sockets, you only need to remove the ballast, plug the LED bulbs in, and you're done! Contrary to popular belief, LED light tube is very easy to install in this day and age, and the bulk of LED products are now "plug-and-play" while still offering a slick look with unmatched energy savings.

First of all, LED light tube is more energy efficient than fluorescent lighting due to the high efficacy of LEDs. LEDs for interior lighting have already broken the efficacy record of 100 lumen per watt, while fluorescent lighting only has an efficacy of around 60 lumen per watt. 

LED has a power factor of 0.9, which means most of the power is converted into light, but when fluorescent lighting works, a huge amount of power is converted into heat which will be dispersed finally. LED lighting consumes only 30% energy as fluorescent lighting to deliver the same lumen output.

Secondly, Flexible LED lighting has a much longer lifetime than fluorescent lighting since LED lighting is solid state lighting which is more stable and reliable. LEDs can last over 50,000 hours which means 17 years under normal use. 

Whereas fluorescent lighting only has a lifetime of around 5,000 hours, which means you have to replace them as often. Using LED lighting can greatly save your expenses which are used to buy new light bulbs and pay for the labor.

When it is switched on for hours a day, especially for a long period of time, fluorescent lighting may have some hot spots due to heat it generates, which does not happen to LED lighting. 

These hot spots cause the rest of the light to become dimmer, and quickly results in a dead CFL tube, a perfect reason to switch to LED T8 Tubes or T5 tubes, depending on the socket size. 

Fluorescent lighting / CFL pigtails can cause eyestrain, but LED lighting does not as a result of its uniform and unparalleled balanced light output, and does not flicker or emit a low pitched humming like the earlier fluorescent technology.

In contrast, LED lighting tubes s solid state lighting which does not contain any filaments that could break (like incandescent) or hazardous materials like CFLs. Someone may say that the upfront costs of LED lighting is too high, due to the technology used to achieve such a high lumens per watt (efficacy) rating, it is true. 

However, think about the long term energy savings, and savings you will get from not needing to replace the lights, for up to 5 or 10 times as long, depending if the light replaced was incandescent or fluorescent. Either way, the more high energy halogen, incandescent, or fluorescent lights you replace, the more money you will save every month.

Although everyone may have seen LED light tubes in their lifetime, they may not have realized what they were actually looking at. Light tubes, whether LED or not, are exactly what they sound like. 

They are composed of a glass or silicon outer shell that houses a lighting structure. They are tubular shaped, and usually mounted in ceilings, behind a glass or plastic shield. 


They are commonly seen, and most people might recognize them from here, in school buildings or even gymnasiums.

It also produce much less heat than other forms of lighting, allowing those needing the light to be comfortable in their own space and also preventing the necessity of the air conditioning unit running all day. 


These factors alone greatly decrease the electricity bills and make the investment of LED tube lights more and more worth it. 


Because of the decrease in carbon monoxide gas, the low amount of electricity wasted as heat, and the fact that they're so recyclable, owners of LED light bulbs are eligible for many more rebates,


If their entire building was outfitted with archaic incandescent lights, it will not be possible.

One LED light tube is normally around sixty to seventy dollars, making them a bit of a hefty investment, especially a normal light fixture usually needs two to four of those tubes.

What Are The Differences Between LED Lights And Traditional Bulbs

When considering replacing your current lighting system with LED lights, you are probably reviewing all of the information about this technology and what such a change will require. But, if you are not knowledgeable about the differences between the two, you may be hesitant to pay the upfront costs which come with installing LED lighting tubes.

This type of light gets its name from the fact that it is based off a light emitting diode. In fact, these little plastic pieces are not light bulbs at all however they are very small semiconductors which have been cordoned off and separated by a plastic dome. This dome helps to protect the light which is being emitted as well as focuses it on a specific area.

However, a normal light bulb uses a filament. And this filament does not produce any reaction until power is directly applied. Whenever this happens, the filament start to glow red hot, which in turn creates light as a byproduct. It is known as a hot process, and it takes a lot of energy. Ai LED Lighting lamps are different as they rely on a cold process to produce light. Which means the light you are seeing is not a product of immense heat. Instead, electrons are stimulated in the semiconductor whenever electricity is applied, and the light is a side effect of this stimulation which produces photons, that then appear in the visible light spectrum.

Conventional light bulbs require so much energy because the filament must remain heated at all times to produce the light. When these filaments get too hot, they burn out easily and so needs to be replaced. This is less likely to happen because of the lack of heat. As such, they use a lot less energy and last longer, making them a lot more efficient.

As most LED bulbs do not have the same wattage as traditional lights, you will need to use more light bulbs for the same effect. However, even though you are using two or three times the number of traditional ones, you are also using lesser energy overall.
