Why Get LED T8 Tube Lights For Your Home

Are you getting LED T8 tube lights for your home? Like so many other people today you are probably looking for ways that you can help to protect the environment.

One particular way that this can be done is through replacing any fluorescent lights you have in your home or business premises with the new LED T8 light tubes.

Even though fluorescent lights are more cost effective than the incandescent type there are still problems associated with them.

This is why then you should be considering replacing any light tubes you have in your home with the new LED variety.

One of the big problems you will face if you choose to stick with using fluorescent lights rather than LED T8 tube lights is that they are difficult to replace.

After a fluorescent light has been installed replacing them is a very difficult task because of the plugs and ballast used in them.

Before a new fluorescent tube can be installed the previous one along with its plugs and ballast has to be removed.

However you also have to consider when replacing a defunct fluorescent tube that you need to dispose of it in the proper manner.

As these lights contain very toxic materials in them they need to be disposed of in the same ways, as other hazardous materials have to be.

So you will need to actually take them to a specialist-recycling unit, you cannot just put them out with the waste.

Whereas when it comes to these tube lights these are made from a silicon substrate that is encased in glass.

As these don't contain any kinds of materials such as mercury they can be put out with your regular waste when they finally need replacing.

But this isn't the case when it comes to using LED tube lights, as these contain no hazardous materials. Plus of course as they last considerably longer you won't need to replace them as often.

Plus replacing of such lights can often be done by you rather than having to hire the services of a qualified electrician to replace them for you.

As well as being much easier to replace another reason for getting rid of fluorescent lights for the new LED type is that they can be more beneficial to your health.

Fluorescent lights unfortunately don't emit a more yellowy colour light and this can lead to strain being placed on your eyes, in turn this can result to you suffering from headaches.

However the light emitted by these tube lights is much clearer and brighter and also tends to be a lot whiter in colour.

As you probably already know LED lights not only use less power but also generate a lot less heat when on. In fact the temperature at which these lights operate is just 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

So it is possible should the need arise for you to be able to remove and replace any LED T8 tube light tubes with having to wait until they have cooled down.

Why Replace Fluorescent Tubes With LED T8 Tubes

Would you replace fluorescent tubes with LED T8 light tubes?  It isn't only businesses that should be looking to replace any fluorescent lights in their premises with the new LED T8 light tubes, but also many homeowners as well.

The various forms of LED lighting now available provide a number of different benefits to you over the more conventional incandescent, fluorescent and halogen lights currently available.

As well as being very energy efficient, the new LED T8 tubes along with other LED fluorescent lights use a lot less power. Plus you will find maintaining such lights costs less and we mustn't forget that these types of lights also last a lot longer.

On average you can expect good LED light tubes to provide around 50,000 hours of illumination, whereas with more traditional forms of lighting these will only provide around 10,000 hours of illumination before they need to be replaced.

Over the last few years the many different styles of LED lights being made available has gradually increased. Certainly in recent years sales of such including those of the LED T8 tubes has begun to grow.

The reason why sales are starting to grow is become the manufacturers are now able to use technology that helps to bring down the cost of making them.

But why should you replace your current fluorescent tube lights with the new types of T8 tubes available?

Well the first reason is that these light tubes don't contain any kinds of toxic materials in them, but fluorescent ones do.

Most fluorescent lights you purchase today tend to contain mercury, which isn't only harmful to you but also to the environment.

You may not be aware of this but should you break a fluorescent light you will need to leave that room for at least 4 hours, as there are toxic materials in the air that could lead to you suffering damage to your respiratory system.

Another reason we can give for you considering replacing your current fluorescent lights with the new LED light bulb is that they are a lot easier to install.

The new LED light tubes available are much easier to install because they don't require any ballast. Also you don't need any specialist fittings to be able to replace your fluorescent lights with the new LED models. This is because they come with the same fittings as fluorescent ones.

However before you can install them, after removing the old fluorescent lights you will then need to remove the ballast also. Once the old light and ballast has been removed you simply install the new type of light tubes into the same fitting.

Yes fluorescent lights do save you more energy than incandescent lights do, but they aren't as energy efficient as the new tubes are. Most of the new LED T8 tubes you can purchase use only half the number of watts that a conventional fluorescent light does.

In fact by installing such lighting you could find your annual electricity bills being halved by as much as 50%. Yet they are capable to provide much better illumination as well.

The Benefits Of Purchasing From LED T8 Tube Manufacturers

In the last 20 years or so, the technology used in the making of LED lights has come a long way. In the beginning, LED T8 light tube manufactuers would only create products suitable for use in electronic equipment and for use in business premises.

However, LED lights have now come of age and are beginning to make a huge impact on our lives because they offer a much greener and cleaner solution to our energy needs.

When you look at any lights produced by LED T8 tube manufacturers you will see that theirs are able to convert 90% of the power they need into usable energy. In turn this helps to ensure that the room in which they are installed is provided with plenty of light.

There have been many improvements made to the making of LED lights by manufacturers today. As a result of these we are now able to take advantage of them being able in a large number of different colours.

This includes a light that is able to emit a pure white or "noon day" light that offers instant clarity and sharpness to objects around us so placing less strain on our eyes.

Another feature of course which is making such equipment so popular today is that LED T8 tube manufacturers don't use any filaments, ballast or starters in theirs.

As a result of this, these forms of lights don't need as much maintenance and in turn helps them to be able to provide illumination to a room for up to 50,000 hours.

Yet even though they provide a great deal of illumination in comparison to more conventional tube lights you have already the new LED type only use up to 70% of the energy.

As such lights are much more energy efficient, you could see your annual electricity bills being reduced by as much as 50%.

If you were to replace 3 fluorescent tube lights with the LED type available from LED T8 tube manufacturers, you will see your electricity costs cut by more than 50% and yet these lights are able to produce the same amount of light.

But what we feel is the real benefit from the installation of LED T8 light tubes is that you are helping to protect the environment.

Every year around 50,000lbs of waste mercury is being placed into landfill sites because so many fluorescent lights are being thrown away.

Of that 50,000lbs of mercury it only takes 4mg of it to poison 7,000 gallons of water, which then makes it undrinkable.

We have all become aware of how fragile the earth's water system is and so it really does make sense to get rid of fluorescent and incandescent lights and replace with those made by LED manufacturers.

Whereas when it comes to LED ones, these are completely recyclable, so it does help to protect the environment further.

In order to learn about the benefits from installing such lighting, don't be afraid to make contact with one of the many LED T8 tube manufactuers you see advertising online.

How To Install LED Tube Lights

For the LED tube light installation to be simple, you will have to make some simple modifications to the fixture to properly install the bulbs. Then you can enjoy better lighting using approximately half the electricity and lasting as long as 50,000 hours or more

You will have to make some simple modifications to the fixture to properly install the bulbs. The good news is that installing LED tube lights in an existing fluorescent fixture is relatively simple.

In addition, you should be able to buy fixtures especially designed for these lights in the near future, and they should actually be cheaper than the equivalent fluorescent fixtures.

Fluorescent fixtures are designed to support a specific types and size of fluorescent tube. A fluorescent tube is incorporated into a fluorescent lighting system which consists of two or three main components of the fluorescent lamp (fluorescent bulb or tube), the ballast, and of course the starter system.

Additionally, the system for a tube lamp includes a lamp holder and a switch. Depending on the particular fluorescent lighting system, the starter may be a replaceable component, a starter may not be required, or the starter function may be integrated into the ballast.

The starting function may also rely on the physical design of the fixture. To retrofit a fluorescent light fixture to support a LED tube light, the ballast must be disconnected.

Once the old traditional bulbs are removed from the lamp holders and the electricity to the fixture is turned off, you will probably have to remove the reflector that is located behind the bulbs and provides a housing for the wiring and ballast that lie behind it.

Typically, it is fairly simple to remove the reflector or cover, but if it is not clear how to do this, you should consult the documentation from the fixture manufacturer.

If the fixture has an electronic ballast, you only need to remove that and then wire the power directly to the lamp holders, completing one circuit for each bulb.

This is fairly simple, and typically you can use the existing wire in the fixture and then just add some wire nuts. If you have an older fixture with a magnetic ballast and starter, you will have to remove or open the starter and remove or short the magnetic ballast.

Depending on how much wire you have to work with, it is a good idea to leave long enough wires leading out of the ballast to be able to reconnect the ballast with wire nuts, if you should ever want to convert the fixture back to use for fluorescent bulbs or want to use the ballast somewhere else.

Typically, the ballast will have two screws or bolts holding it in place in the fixture, and these can be removed using a screwdriver or pair of pliers, as appropriate. You have to dispose the ballast according to the local regulations as should the old fluorescent bulbs. Because the fluorescent bulbs contain a small amount of highly-toxic mercury, they should be treated as hazardous waste and disposed of accordingly.

Once the ballast (and starter, if one was present) have been removed and the wires reconnected to complete a circuit for each bulb, replace the reflector or cover over the wiring and the area where the ballast was located, and the LED tube light can be inserted in the end sockets.

Unlike traditional bulbs which do not have a top or bottom, LED tube lights will have an obvious top and bottom, with metallic heat sink located on the backside of the tube and the LEDs visible under a lens on the side that will be aimed towards the area which is to be illuminated. Turn on the switch and if you have done everything properly, now you should have as good or better lighting using approximately half the electricity and lasting as long as 50,000 hours or more.

Are LED Fluorescent Tubes Energy Saving?

Should you use LED fluorescent tubes? There are millions of general service fluorescent tubes in the market place today, until recently these were considered the most energy efficient lighting solution available.

The downside to this form of lighting is that each tube contains a small amount of mercury vapour, a toxic heavy metal.

This can provide not just a health risk when the tubes are broken, but can also accumulate in landfills before entering the water table or causing further pollution.

Fluorescent lamps use electricity to excite mercury vapour inside the glass tube and always require a ballast to regulate the flow of power through the lamp. A starter is in the circuit to heat the contact ends of the tube that ionizes the mercury vapour creating UV light.

The inside of the tube is coated with a phosphor material that glows when exposed to the UV light produced by the mercury inside the fluorescent tube.

Recent developments in SMD (Surface Mount Diode) LED technology have now meant that LED fluorescent light tubes are now a reality.

LEDs are a more efficient form of lighting product consisting of small chips of conductive material that release light when a current is applied to them. They contain no filaments and can produce up to 25 times more light per watt than conventional light bulbs.

They require far less energy in their manufacture than fluorescent tubes, and only 3% of the energy they will consume over their life expectancy is consumed in their manufacture, and they are also produced from non toxic materials.

The tubes are made from polycarbonate, a material that is more robust and durable than glass, so accidents will not require special cleanup procedures.

While LED technology is more expensive than existing fluorescents at face value, they will last up to 10 times as long, while consuming 65% less energy.

In most general purpose lighting applications they additional cost of the LED technology will more than pay for itself within the first 18 months.

The only drawback is the tighter beam angle of the LEDs, while some tubes are manufactured from a polycarbonate light diffusing material, others have a narrow focus which may not be suitable for replacing existing tubes.

Many fluorescent fixtures are designed with reflectors that help to distribute the light from the tubes evenly in their intended environment.

This is a problem similar to what was faced when compact fluorescents began replacing incandescent light bulbs, this is a problem that will soon be overcome and allow faster adoption of this emerging LED fluorescent tubes.

Should You Use LED Light Tubes In Your House?

Unlike incandescent bulbs, high-power LED light tubes cannot be simply plugged into a wall socket.

Several companies are working to overcome the technological and economic challenges by developing LED light fixtures and retrofit these lights using high-power LEDs.

Thermal management, complex drive circuitry, optics, and packaging are challenging hurdles for developers to contend with.

There are also educational barriers to overcome in the development of commercial LED illumination products.

Getting users to adopt new types of fixtures, understand the illumination characteristics of LEDs, choose the appropriate viewing angle for a given application.

And also select the appropriate intensity for a given application, and understand the limitations of LED color temperatures are pivotal to developing the market for LED technology in commercial and residential lighting.

The Illumination Angle

LEDs are extremely energy-efficient from an illumination efficacy standpoint, i.e., lumens per watt.

Upwards of 95 percent of the light can be directed at the target area of illumination whereas a typical incandescent bulb may be only 60 percent effective.

In other words, a lot of the light produced by an incandescent bulb does not go to the intended target.

Incandescent bulbs require reflectors, louvers, and/or diffusers to compensate for unnecessary light. Fluorescent bulbs are more energy-efficient than incandescents, but the ballast may consume up to 20 percent of the electrical energy going into the fixture.

Retrofitting LED technology in traditional luminaries is tricky because most fixtures are designed to overcome the limitations of traditional spherical light output.

Reflectors, cones, masks, shades and diffusers help bend, redirect, or shield the light emitted from incandescent, fluorescent and halogen sources, but it creates unnecessary physical barriers for implementing LED technology.

Designing specific forward-fit LED-based luminaries can produce several times foot-candles on a given area per watt than other traditional incandescent bulb technologies.

Because of the directional illumination pattern that LEDs provide the light can be directed to the specific area that needs to be illuminated.

The Light Color

Over the years, fluorescent light bulb manufacturers had some challenges getting users to accept the white color produced by fluorescent technology.

Because of the limitations of phosphor technology, the fluorescent industry introduced subjective terms such as "cool white" or "warm white" to draw comparisons to incandescent white.

Not coincidentally, white LED manufacturers face the same challenges since white LED technology is based on phosphor energy.

To put things in quantitative perspective, LED manufactures have referred to Color Rendering Index (CRI) which is a measurement of a light source's ability to render colors accurately.

The higher the CRI, the more natural the colors appear, with natural sunlight having a CRI of 100. However, this may not be the best metric for comparing light sources.

But the bigger issue is, the light intensity benchmark for an LED tube lamp is not the watt.

Traditional LEDs used for simple status indication and displays come in small epoxy packages and their light output is measured in candelas because this is a measurement of direct-view luminous intensity.

With the recent development of high-power LEDs for illumination purposes, the lux or lumen (one lux is equal to one lumen per square meter) is a more suitable unit of measurement to compare the LED light output to traditional sources because we are more concerned about the volume of light rather than the directional intensity.
